Founded in 1989, ALBA BERLIN has become the most popular basketball club in Germany and one of the most prestigious franchises in European basketball. With an overall record of 9 German League titles, 10 German Cup titles and winning the Korac Cup in 1995, the team belongs to the most successful professional sports teams in Germany. The ALBA BERLIN men's team currently competes in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, the second-best basketball league behind the NBA. This marks a 30-year-long streak of playing in European competitions. In the recent 2019/2020 season, ALBA BERLIN managed to win the German Cup and German Championship and is back on top of German basketball.
Not only successful on the male professional level, ALBA BERLIN is proud to have the largest youth and women’s department in Germany, being regularly awarded for their successful development standards. Cooperating with more than 160 schools, universities and other educational key players in and outside of Berlin makes the club an important social role player in society. At ALBA everyone is convinced that Basketball can make a valuable contribution to living a healthy, sustainable and socially integrated lifestyle and has the power to inspire and unite people in a way that little else does.
Since 2011 ALBA BERLIN uses the power of basketball to connect people of all ages and cultural backgrounds across Asia with projects in China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong SAR. Common partners for joint projects are schools, universities, basketball federations and clubs, corporations and key players in politics, which share our vision of basketball as one universal language.
The ALBA Group is the proud main sponsor behind ALBA BERLIN and makes their relationship the longest-lasting partnership in German sports since the team’s founding. Together they strive for a sustainable and innovative future in their respective fields, trying to inspire the upcoming generations. As a globally leading recycling company with a strong presence in Asia, the ALBA Group Asia is pushing for a positive change turning waste into valuable resources and preventing environmental pollution. The ALBA family believes that basketball is much more than a beautiful and exciting sport. As a unique platform, it has great potential to educate about the importance of topics such as recycling, environmental protection and intercultural exchange. Through basketball and recycling initiatives, ALBA aims to connect its two areas of expertise in a meaningful way to enrich the future of the educational landscape in countries like China and beyond.
China plays an important role in the rise of basketball in Asia, with an enormous follower base. According to recent Tencent Sports research data, the number of basketball fans in China reached roughly 625 million in 2018. Of that number, 143 million people in China consider themselves to be "hardcore" fans, regularly watching and playing basketball. The remaining 482 million are considered general fans, who enjoy basketball but play it less frequently and do not watch games on a daily or weekly basis. Data from 2014 of the State Sports General Administration suggest, that there are approximately 600,000 basketball courts in China.
After failing to meet the high expectations as host of the 2019 FIBA World Cup, the Chinese Basketball Association under the leadership of former NBA-star Yao Ming launched a new national development strategy promoting youth and professional basketball across the country. ALBA’s German-Chinese basketball program supports this mission with annually conducted basketball tournaments, coaches and teachers workshops, youth basketball camps in Germany and China and exhibition game tours and training camps with ALBA’s professional teams. With the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup, co-hosted by Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia, the popularity of basketball is projected to grow even further in Asia, opening up exciting opportunities to promote the sport.
